Accessing Better Health Outcomes with Medicinal Cannabis

August 10, 2022

Medicinal Cannabis is now more affordable, and accessible, than ever.

If you suffer from a chronic medical condition, have tried other prescribed medication unsuccessfully, or are looking for an alternative treatment plan to help manage the symptoms of your health condition, this is great news.

The range of approved indications for treatment by medicinal cannabis is on the rise.

The Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) has approved the usage of medicinal cannabis products for over 130 health conditions, in Australia.

These include, but are not limited to, ADHD, Anxiety, Arthritis, Chronic Cancer Pain, Epilepsy, Fibromyalgia, Migraine, Glaucoma, Parkinson’s Disease, PTSD, Sleep disorders, as well as many other conditions.

In Australia, medicinal cannabis has been legal as a complementary health care option since 2016.

Eligibility for prescription is now relatively straightforward.

Firstly, you’ll need to contact your GP, or Specialist, who will assess your condition to determine whether medicinal cannabis is a viable treatment option.

If eligible, your healthcare professional will create a treatment plan, and provide a prescription that you can fill at a pharmacy/order online for home delivery.

If your indication isn’t listed above, you may still be eligible for a treatment plan, if you suffer from a chronic medical condition (lasting more than three months).

Your doctor may apply to the TGA for approval, as long as you meet eligibility requirements. They can provide evidence that your condition may benefit from this treatment.

The treatment plan, that your healthcare professional prescribes, may include CBD, THC, or a combination of THC/CBD medication.

Your treatment plan will provide a specific recommendation for dosage to support the treatment, and better manage the symptoms of your condition.

As medicinal cannabis is heavily regulated it is often of much higher quality than recreational cannabis, which doesn’t have regulatory oversight, to ensure consistency of medicinal properties and reduction of contaminants.

Medicinal Cannabis must comply with Therapeutic Goods Orders such as TGO 93, and TGO 100.

These set the Australian Standard for quality, explicitly determining tolerances for levels of contaminants and microbial content.

Standardised regulations provide medicinal cannabis patients with peace of mind surrounding transparency of the origin, quality, and purity of the cannabis used to treat their medical condition.
