In Australia, medicinal cannabis was, federally, legalised in 2016.

In all six states, and two territories, medicinal cannabis can be prescribed for conditions such as chronic pain, insomnia, epilepsy, cancer-induced nausea and vomiting, and anxiety.

In QLD, NSW, VIC, WA, and SA – Any doctor can choose to prescribe medicinal cannabis, or provide a referral, if it is determined an appropriate treatment by the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA). Prescriptions can be dispensed by any pharmacy or shipped directly to you.

• Northern Territory – Only authorised medicinal cannabis practitioners can prescribe. 
• Tasmania – Medicinal cannabis laws in Tasmania are arguably Australia’s most confusing.  A patient must have their General Practitioner refer them to a relevant specialist; the specialist can then provide medicinal cannabis in limited circumstances once conventional treatment has been unsuccessful.

Q. Can I legally drive when taking medicinal cannabis?

A. If you’re taking a CBD isolate product then it’s perfectly legal to drive. If your prescription contains THC it is illegal to drive in any state, although Medicinal Cannabis patients can seek an exemption in Tasmania. Always listen to your prescribing doctor’s advice.
